Hyatt Centric or Sheraton New Orleans?
In this review I am compare the Hyatt Centric and the Sheraton by Marriott. These hotels are a few blocks away from each other on Canal Street. Although both are nice properties, there are some pros and cons to each that may help you decide between the two.
Both are on the fringe of the French Quarter although the Hyatt entrance is on a side street that is actually in the French Quarter.
The Bottom Line
All things considered, I would recommend the Hyatt Centric over the Sheraton. For me, the overall experience at the Hyatt Centric was better, including the friendliness of the staff, the elite status recognition and the decor. However, if you find a good cash or point redemption at the Sheraton, or if you are attending a conference and prefer a business environment, the Sheraton is a good option.

Hyatt Centric Lobby
Hyatt Centric Junior Suite
Pros
- Location is at the edge of the French Quarter, close to vibrant nightlife, food options and cultural activities
- Short lines at elevators and front desk for check in
- Refrigerators in the rooms
- Rooftop pool and bar with great city views
- Great elite status recognition for Globalists (upgrade to Jr suite (when available), 2 daily waters, breakfast and late check out)
Cons
- Street noise can be loud depending on where your room is located
- Parking is expensive (currently $45), but waived for Globalists when using points for your stay
- Bathrooms may need a little maintenance
- TIP: When you make your reservation, or when you check-in, ask for a higher floor on the quieter side of the hotel.
Sheraton
This property is touted by Marriot as a “family-friendly” hotel near the French Quarter (is that an oxymoron?) It is an adequate hotel in a good location, but lacks any special features to make it stand out.
Sheraton Guest Room
Sheraton Lobby
Pros
- Good location, on canal street and very close to French Quarter
- Any level of elite status will typically will get you a room on a higher floor
- Close to the convention center if you have a conference
Cons
- Conference hotel so might get very busy with long waits for elevator
- Room furniture and lighting dated with old lampshades
- Room wasn't cleaned well (stains on walls and on shower curtains)
- Insufficient outlets and the few outlets are in unpractical locations
- $50 charge for refrigerator; however, YMMV because one was left in my room along with a microwave
Travel Tips
- Ask for rooms on a higher floor if you have any level of status.
- Parking can be expensive in the French Quarter, consider skipping the rental cars unless you plan to drive out of the central area.
